Loved seeing a photo of your father and the description of what his birthday meant to you and what it demanded of his daughters! It says a lot about his presence in your memoir. Also loved getting your broad (both high and popular art) suggestions of things to see and read. I plan to run out to the Henry Taylor exhibit. An end of the year treat!

I only just noticed the Henry Taylor is still on this month. Let me know what you think!

Loving and wry! it sounds like he was the opposite of a disciplinarian, with you and maybe with himself.

A lovely nostalgic post, Victoria - you sketch your father for us so evocatively, by telling us about a few of the things he loved. I also enjoyed your year's round-up and hope those exhibitions will be heading to the UK in 2024!

I happen to be a twin, and I've always shared my birthday with someone else. Not Jesus, but still - I understand where your dad is coming from! Always having to split a gift, etc...

I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum, though: I hate it when my birthday is just about *me*. It makes me SO uncomfortable.

Happy holidays to you! Looking forward to hearing more about your father's story in the new year.

Yes, lots of families have birthday clusters too-- with a “birthday week,” for example. I could see how it would be nice to share that and celebrate together.

Happy new year to you too! It’s been so nice to be in conversation this way.
