He seemed like a figure out of "Nostromo" at first glance, but then his experiences in Central America made me think of the work of one of my favourite Latin American writers, Miguel Ángel Asturias (who will doubtless make an appearance over at English Republic of Letters at some stage). Thank you for that.
I've said it before - but I just love following your research into your father's paintings. Did he keep tabs at all on his own paintings? I think I would be tempted to, if I were an artist!

No, he definitely didn’t keep track of his paintings; strangely none of us thought to account for them until after his death.
I don’t know Asturias. I’ll have to track him down (more rabbit holes). Or I’ll watch out for his cameo in one of your posts. 😁
