This is the spiciest one! Love it. Those big showy cars say so much. My father bought a jaguar when he launched his company because he wanted people to look at him.

I like that this installment, again, has the phrase “you can see....” it’s such a friendly way to bring us into the workshop with you.

Good writing, as always. But I don't think the family car is just a metaphor. Maybe some more comparative scenes of family trips, some imagined, some remembered. I think car trips can say a lot about family past and present. Claustrophobia, freedom, familial coziness, need to break free. I loved the early part of the essay when you did attach the personal to the historical Americana concept.

Thanks, Marnie. You're right; it's more than a metaphor. I tried to return to connecting the personal and historical in the Henry Ford Museum section, where my family and I create new routes through the aisles. But there's a lot to say here--
