Thank you for the mention Victoria, much appreciated. I enjoyed your article. Of course, the name Victoria became popular because of Queen Victoria - who was christened Alexandrina Victoria. Her German mother was called Victoria, but it was an unusual name in Britain at the time.
Love the photo of Hans & Karen and their children! And you’re right - it’s so revealing that they placed your grandfather right in the centre of the composition / tableau vivant. The whole Victorian era is so fascinating. My new novel, Topsy & Co, was published a few months ago, and it’s centred on the life of the C19 designer/writer William Morris, so I was immersed in researching all things late-C19 for a couple of years. Morris completed two life changing pilgrimages to Iceland, so there’s an interesting connection there too.
Thanks, James. I've been intrigued by your novel since I subscribed to your newsletter. I'm going to go look for it now-- my biography was of Julia Margaret Cameron so there's some mid-19th-century overlap in their Pre-Raphaelite circles. Looking forward to it!
Ooh, I love Julia Margaret Cameron's photos and her links to the Pre-Raphaelites + Virginia Woolf are so interesting. I shall have to read your book too!
