Oh, Victoria, this is so touching. Starting from our analog world, we're still wrapping our minds around using these digital tools to preserve the context for treasured artifacts by combining photographs and words like this. I wonder if your new friends J & R might permanently associate your writing with the painting itself, either as a printout attached to the back of the canvas or a QR code referencing a link to this post, archived to the Wayback machine at Archive.org. The painting has a new home and a new life and it will carry on for generations. ❤️

Yes, I loved finding and exploring that continuity. And it's an interesting suggestion to document this "afterlife" in some other way too.

Wonderful, delicately moving piece. So far this is my favorite. You're getting to the feeling beneath the words, the engine of the tale of finding your father, his work, and his place in the world. Utterly beautiful. Thank you!

Thank you for this encouragement, Marnie. This one did feel like it had to come last.

I found this a moving piece and admire the way you generated interest with all the grim details of your journey. And how wonderful to be met by the enthusiasm of the owners of the painting!

Thanks, Jeffrey. I start out thinking that these research journeys and posts are about the paintings, but they are really about the people.... That shouldn't be surprising but it is.

This entry really moved me. I am trying to understand why. I love the journey and the kindness of strangers, plus the forward motion of time, that gay marriage is the law of the land. And also sadly, that "Sandy Hook" means something different now... I love perspective taking exercises. I am curious how you would write it from J or R?

Thanks, Susie! I haven't actually tried that exercise yet but I did choose it with myself in mind this time. I was so surprised by their delight in meeting me and hearing about my father. I will try it and report back.

I wonder about Sandy Hook. There's one in NJ too, which may be more likely as my father's source. Either way it's an inescapable association now.
